| “The Algarve’s temperate climate, low pollution and crime rates and inexpensive cost make it an attraction destination for expatriates to relocate”. |
|
Living in the algarve
Many people choose to relocate permanently to the Algarve to enjoy the temperate climate and more relaxed lifestyle. Golf is one of the major attractions for people moving here in their retirement, with an impressive range of golf courses located along the length of the Algarve.
The Algarve has long been a very popular destination for British expatriates, although the market is now expanding and it is proving to be popular with other European nationals.
Unlike the problems of over-development suffered in coastal areas of Spain, the Algarve still has an unspoilt feel.
Other reasons for the Algarve's attraction for expatriates are:
- A relaxed, laid-back feel, in contrast to the fast pace of life in northern Europe - the Portuguese people are welcoming and friendly.
- A low crime rate, inexpensive food and drink and fresh, clean air, with very low levels of pollution.
- After Portuguese, English is the most widely spoken language.
- Good European and inter-continental connections from Faro and Lisbon airports, making it a perfect location for those who need to travel regularly for business. Many low-cost airlines offer excellent fare deals on routes to Faro from Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Stanstead, East Midlands, Manchester, Dublin and more, with frequent flights available which increase during the busy summer months.
- Modern technology which makes it possible to keep in touch worldwide, through ADSL Internet connections and low-rate telecommunications systems. English language TV is easily available through satellite.
- Levels of health care are greatly improved with good private hospitals and clinics throughout the Algarve and a new Central Hospital is planned for Faro. There are a number of English-speaking doctor's and dental surgeries in the region.
- There are a few private schools in the Algarve who apply the British curriculum, such as the São Lourenço International School near Quinta do Lago; Vilamoura International School, with its Portuguese and English speaking sections; Porches International School in the Western Algarve and "EAST", a new International school at Tavira which adheres to the British curriculum. Lisbon also has International Schools such as St. Julians.
- Sports are well catered for throughout the Algarve, which can be enjoyed outdoors throughout the year due to the good weather, such as golf and tennis. There are many good sports clubs with gymnasia throughout the region for those who want to keep fit.
- In recent years there has been a major upturn in relation to cultural events throughout the Algarve, with regular seasonal entertainment programmes offered by the Municipalities, particularly Faro and Loulé. Lisbon also attracts many major international artists for shows and concerts, with much lower ticket prices than in other European cities.
